Vanda Scaravelli, an Italian yoga practitioner, who studied with BKS Iyengar and TKV Desikachar, developed in the 80s and 90s a revolutionary approach to the asanas of Hatha yoga that inspires hundreds of people around the world. Vanda’s key observation was that the spine has a natural division (at the 5th lumbar vertebrae) which allows it to move in opposite ways simultaneously: from the waist downwards pulled by gravity and from the waist upwards, through the top of the head, lifting us upwards effortlessly.
